The most basic sensations in vision - lightness and brightness - are elicited by luminance, which is defined as the overall physical intensity of a light stimulus. As a number of the demonstrations here show, these percepts can be radically altered by empirical information that changes the probability distribution of the possible sources of the various stimuli shown.
